For O, though, you can install on a PC for multi users. When a user signs in, they are using their O license. As for people not policing themselves, well, that’s how most licenses are. Just to chime in here, it’s not just small business but large organisations which are affected too. I work for a huge retailer that has had a model of shared machines wirh shared accounts that are used by anywhere between 1 to 20 people during the course of a day across a few thousand sites.
We were looking at O but the jump would have been from about device licences to user licenses, which was ridiculously prohibitive. MS came back and said they would do a deal, effectively allowing us to buy 1 user license for every 5 users that actually used a machine, echoing what others in this thread have said is possible.
Still licences more than we wanted to pay for so we’re not going with it. O is not actually a good deal in a lot of cases. Basically, the terms are negotiable. You can indeed get 5 users for 1 license but based on our experience, MS need to OK it and it needs to be written into your agreement. Being one of the very small companies referred to throughout this thread I’d like to throw a slight spanner into the works. It wasn’t perfect and there are certainly improvements that need to be made but all in all it was worth it.
I wanted to get the same version for my wife and partner and so I butted heads with the topic of this thread. Could I put it on her PC and laptop as part of my subscription? I interpreted the terms as one user meant me and nobody else, but like so many others I couldn’t find it definitively spelled out.
I went online to the MS store and spoke via messenger to one of their pre-sales reps and explained the situation. Their suggestion was I used the remaining three slots I had to install it on her devices. They didn’t seem to see a problem with it. Now I grant you that this will only have been tier one staff but if MS sales reps say that is a small company wrong to argue? Personally I still think the rep was wrong and have not taken them up on their “suggestion.
One could argue that the laptop is community property and owned by you as well as your wife therefore you’re allowed if you want but I don’t see an issue with proceeding.
Sales reps like that are certainly not what I would call He probably took a quick look at it, saw it said 5 installs, and just assumed it was fine. Personally I would install it for my wife, as I pretty much consider everything ‘ours’ not mine or hers. But the business partner would buy a license.
Or did I read that wrong? Was that wife who has 2 computers? In that case, yeah, I’d install on both with my license, because what’s mine is hers. I already have it installed on my desktop and laptop and she would need it on her desktop, laptop, and notebook.
That would use up all five installs. I do wonder though, how pedantic MS could be if they wanted to be, as now that MS tracks us all by sign-in they can see the difference between “his” and “hers. It says “Each user can install Says nothing about who actually can “use” the product on those devices.
